Michel Mombauer Shmith
and Maria Garrett
Michel Mombauer Shmith (c.1825 – 1872) migrated from Prussia to the United States and onto New South Wales (NSW) during the gold rushes. There he married Maria Garrett (c. 1838 – 1900), an Irish famine orphan. From what is known of them, they had a life of many ups and downs in the midst of a gold rush. They moved from the Bathurst area to the Young area when the rush moved further south and were involved in the hotel trade. After Michel’s death the age of 46, Maria married Timothy Ignatius Coleman and went on to have a second family.
