Article type: CATALOGUE

Works

Listed here are the pencil sketches and lithographs for this part 2 of Victoria Diggings and Diggers as they are.

As the lithographs are multiples, there are several of each in collections, and I sometimes include references to other holdings. SLV has an thorough representation but the great majority of them have been susbsequently captioned below the image and this has occasionally been used instead of Gill's original title. Several of NLA's lithographs have been coloured.

Titled: "Part the Second Containing 24 and Completing a Series of Forty-Eight Sketches of the Victoria Gold Diggings and Diggers as They Are, By S. T. G. / Lithographed and Published by Macartney & Galbraith, 30 Collins Street, Melbourne".

This is a vignette presented as if on an artist's palette. A reclining and cheerful digger points to the title on a hanging blanket or sheet. In the foreground are a gold washing cradle, axe, spade, pick, bucket, mug and kettle. In the background is a cart beside a shack with a chimney. This is not as busy as the cover for Part 1.

Army Pensioners at Forest Creek.

"When the gold rush began in 1851, Victoria lacked an adequate defence force. At first, the Native Police Corps was expected to maintain law and order at the goldfields. However, the use of this Corps was unpopular so Military Pensioners from Victoria and Tasmania were recruited to form Victoria's Corps of Enrolled Pensioners. These men served as guards at Pentridge Prison, at Government House, and at the Treasury. They formed the Gold Escort and served as peace-keepers on the goldfields at Mount Alexander (Castlemaine) and Bendigo in 1852." (Maree Ring, 2008.)

Diggers on the goldfields dispute a gold claim. Narratively this follows on from "Marking the Claim". The tree stump is a marker (and is emphasised in the later reinterpretation for Blundell's "As they were in 1852" part 1, no. 4/8).

Bryce Ross wrote in his "Mems from the Mount" (probably early June 1852): "... the only serious scrimmage I was informed of that occurred lately, was at Eagle Hawk Gully. Two men had quarrelled about the boundary of their respective holes or claims, when, after a long wrangling, one of them proposed amicable terms, and to shake hands over it; the other agreed to the proposal, and held forth his hand, but, no sooner had he done so, than the other rushed him treacherously with a long knife concealed under his waist ..." "Bendigo Diggings, Tipperary Gully, May 14, 1852. The rainy season has now fairly commenced ... This long desired opportunity for gold washing was joyously hailed, and eagerly grasped at by our digging population, who might be seen running helter skelter in every direction with cradles, puddling tubs, and tin dishes, to work the mountains of stuff which lay stored up beside every tent." A group gather around a preacher on a Sunday at Forrest Creek. The crowd is generally well-behaved but the preacher has his wary eyes on four men!

"Bishop Perry preached here last Sunday to a very attentive audience in the open air, but what a congregation! the row at the Tower of Babel was nothing to be compared to it; unshaven heads, dirty faces, blue and plaid shirts. I recognised some of my South Australian friends there, a preacher had on a sow-wester, a lawyer a blue shirt, a teacher a tartan petticoat, a doctor a shocking bad straw hat and fustian breeks, but I was pleased to see them all so attentive, though rough and from all parts of the globe." Adelaide Morning Chronicle, 14 June 1852: 3. <http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article66451046>.

"A few weak and desultory efforts are made, by the celebration of Divine service, twice every Sunday, by a Church of England minister, and, occasionally by Dissenting ministers; but these are of little service ... to invite men to prayer and thanksgiving in a temple not made with hands, but of God's own workmanship; exposed to the burning sun or the piercing blast; much as I respect and admire, their ministry serves but little good purpose. The assembling of a crowd is the signal for the numerous petty dealers in fruit and lemonade to gather to the spot, and often have I seen a seller of lemonade elbowing his way through the congregation of a preacher, in the midst of the most impressive portion of the service, crying his wares in so lusty a manner as to drown the words of prayer. Even where this is wanting, there are invariably found hanging on the skirts of the assembled hearers, some of those beauteous importations from the sister Colony, who deem it the very acme of bravado and "flashness" to utter fearful blasphemies or impure oaths, almost within the hearing of him who is breathing out the Holy Word of God."
